Cloud Terminology for Beginners: A Straight-Up Guide

Cloud Terminology for Beginners: A Straight-Up Guide

In this blog, we will explore the fundamental concepts and essential terminology used in cloud computing. Let's take a look at them one by one.

Scalability

Scalability is the ability to adjust resource allocation based on your service's demand. It means that according to service demand, we can increase or decrease resources. This not only simplifies data center management but also proves to be a cost-effective strategy.

There are mainly two types of scalability:

Vertical Scalability

In this type of scalability, more power is added to the existing machine. For example, increasing CPU processing power or increasing storage capacity. This type of scaling is also called "Scaling Up".

Horizontal Scalability

In this type of scalability, new resources are introduced, For example adding a new Computer. This approach is known as "Scaling Out".

Elasticity

Elasticity defines the system's capability to dynamically scale in response to varying traffic or user numbers. It adjusts resources upward during peak traffic periods and decreases them during less activity.

Fault Tolerance

Fault tolerance is the system's ability to continue operating without interruption when one or more components fail within the system. If a component fails, another component is allocated to the system.

Availability

Availability is the total uptime of the system.

Availability is calculated as : Availability = Up time / (Up time + Down time)

This metric is crucial for assessing the reliability and accessibility of a system.

These are some of the key terminologies used in cloud computing. Understanding these concepts is useful for anyone working with cloud technologies.
